Hurricane Katrina's aftermath

Hi all. In August of 2005, I lost everything to Katrina. When I applied with Fema for aid they gave me the initial "blanket" amount to relocate. After that they told me I was not in an area that was affected the most and they could not help me. They would have helped me if i had lived in the 9th ward which had been on government assistance prior to the storm. I was only making $9 an hour and supporting my family. I had been divorced a yr prior to the storm and had just started to get back on track. So I decided no big deal I will get some used furniture and start my life over in Texas. I got hired by a temp agency. About 3 weeks prior to the contract ending I asked the temp agency to start looking for me something to go straight into so there was no gap in my work or pay. They did not, they told me work was slow and as soon as they found something they would send me to the new job. This took 3 weeks. In the meantime, I was putting out applications on my own and had gotten with a few other temp agencies to take something. The original temp agency called me and said they had found me something. I went to work, thank God! I was ok, things were a little tight i had talked to my landlord and he told me i could pay him on my first check. I worked another 3 months and again 3 weeks before contract ended I begged for them to find me something else, they said they would try. Again they did not, this time i went 4 weeks without pay. I borrowed money from friends and family to keep my two kids fed, ages 4 and 7 at the time. But i had to pay them back within a month, my family and friends are low payed workers as well. I walked into a new Temp agency with resume in hand and she had just gotten an opening at a big construction group.
I have been working at this group for 11 months now and am a full time employee finally. Unfortunately I am so far behind from the 7 weeks of not being payed that i am now drowning in Katrina's aftermath. I hear of all these people who made out from the storm and i have kept a good outlook and my faith, but now i have a lightbill i have been paying minimal on that has added up. My rent is about $700 dollars from being caught up, I tried to take out a personal loan of $5000.00 to catch up bills and pay things current but because of the last 3 yrs(1yr for divorce and almost 2 yrs for hurricane) my credit has gone to crap. I have heard things from loan officers that sound like this "if you were to get your credit cleaned up we could loan you money to help you with your financial difficulties" What kind of crap is that? If I had my credit cleaned up it would be because nothing was late. I just don't know what to do at this point. I am a single mom with two kids who is struggling to get her feet back on ground. I can't seem to find any help. Please tell me where to go.

Thank you for taking the time to read my lengthy story. Have a wonderful day!
